Transition Beyond Vista: Selecting the next LMS for Chico

TLP staff, along with members of other Academic Technology units, many faculty, and other Information Resources staff, are now investigating a replacement system for our Blackboard Vista 8 Learning Management System. This process actually began over a year ago, when schools that use our system were notified that an “end of life” date had been set for the software – which is sort of like a car company saying they won’t even make parts for your old clunker. So, in Spring 2009, a group of faculty were convened to evaluate some alternatives and were on the verge of recommending a new system when said new system’s company was gobbled up by a competitor. We took this as a sign that the LMS market had some instability, so the decision as made not to decide, at least for a while.

It’s been a while, in software terms. With most CSU campuses moving to or contemplating a move to one of two major LMS options, it is time for Chico to select a new LMS so that we have all the time necessary to buy it, build it, learn it, train it, and start using it before the bolts and screws start coming undone on the old system. The two options are Blackboard Learn 9.1 and Moodle 1.9.

Follow the progress of the LMS Selection team on the LMS Crossroads Blog: http://blogs.csuchico.edu/crossroads/ including this post which gives a summary of the process and timeline for selecting a new LMS.

CSU Chico Faculty and Staff are invited to take the LMS Survey – help us learn how the campus uses the LMS, and advise us about what functionality is important and desirable in the next LMS.

If you’re at a campus that is now using Moodle or Blackboard Learn, we would love to hear from you in the comments here – share thoughts with Chico faculty.
