New year, slightly new look for Bb Learn

On January 2, 2017, Blackboard Learn will have a new look and feel. Although the new “theme” is fairly subtle, it will enable a much more responsive design for students accessing their courses through their mobile devices.

What will it look like?

  • The Blackboard Home page will have a 2-column layout (see Figure 1 below)
  • The Blackboard Home page separates organizations on their own tab (see Figure 1 below)
  • The Blackboard Home page includes links for the Bookstore, Mobile Access and Career Center (see Figure 1 below)
  • The course menu is now white, with limited ability to customize  (see Figure 2 below).

Can I customize my course menu at all?

No. The new theme will override any customization to your course menu, including background colors and buttons. You can however, change the title colors for names of folders, files and items in the main content area.

Questions or Feedback?

If you have questions about how the new look and feel impacts your course, contact the Technology and Learning Program at 898-6167 or send an email to tlp@csuchico.edu.

PeerMark Discontinued for Spring, 2017

Please note that CSU Chico will turn off access to Turnitin PeerMark on January 5, 2017.

Keep in mind, it is only PeerMark that is being turned off; Turnitin Originality Reports and GradeMark are still available.

According to the Turnitin Product Roadmap, they are “no longer making any changes” to the current PeerMark product. Their long term goal is to “replace PeerMark with a new tool that instructors and students can use with ease.”

Please contact a Technology and Learning Program consultant to discuss other peer review options including:

  • Google Docs
  • ePortfolio tools
  • Blackboard Learn’s Self & Peer Review tool
  • Other open source/web solutions

While these may not have the same level of integration with Blackboard Learn, they are worth exploring.

Thank you for your understanding and willingness to explore other options. And of course, if you have a favorite tool you want to share with us, we welcome your input.

Blackboard Collaborate “Classic” Discontinued

Blackboard has discontinued Collaborate “Classic,” for its more modern interface referred to as Collaborate “Ultra.” This means you will no longer have access to Blackboard Collaborate Classic or Classic recordings as of Spring 2017.

Accessing your Blackboard Collaborate Classic Recordings

If you would like save any of your Bb Collaborate Classic recordings, follow the steps in this tutorial or contact the Technology and Learning Program (TLP) at 898-6167. Please save your recordings prior to February 15, 2017.

Web-Based Video Conference Options for Spring 2017

CSU Chico now supports two web video conference technologies:

  • Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
  • Zoom

While Zoom has a reputation of being more robust and easier to use, we are still in the early adoption phase and you should note that the integration with Blackboard Learn is not as deep as Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. We recommend you meet with a consultant from the Technology and Learning program to determine the best option for your needs.

Links to Lynda.com are fixed within Bb Learn!

CSU. Chico Faculty:  using Lynda.com tutorials is a great source of help to our students. Earlier this fall the internal links to Lynda.com tutorials were not working properly, and we shared with you a work-around. The issue has been repaired, and now the shortcut links work great! If you need any assistance with this, don’t hesitate to contact the Technology and Learning Program (or TLP). We are located in the basement of Meriam Library, room 003. Come visit us, or call x6167, or email tlp@csuchico.edu. We are here to serve you and help simplify instructional activities for your students.

Captioning Support Services are now available at Chico State

Captioning Support Services are now available at Chico State.  The captioning support program is part of the Office of Accessible Technology and Services (OATS). This service is free of charge to university faculty and staff.

Kaltura, Chico State’s media server, automatically captions a video’s narration track when the video is uploaded. Instructors are still strongly recommended to review this automatic captioning for accuracy. If the captions are inaccurate and need to be fixed there are two options.

  1. You can edit the captions of the video yourself, or
  2. You can submit a service request for captioning support services.
Please plan accordingly. It is recommended that request be made 3-4 weeks in advance of the needed due date.

Process for requesting captioning services:

  1. Submit a service request
  2. Bring videos to the Office of Accessible Technology and Services (OATS). Located in SSC (Student Services Center) room 320 or provide appropriate links when submitting service request
  3. Reasons for Potential Delay
  • Foreign Language
  • Copyright issues
  • DVD’s

If you have any, questions please contact the Office of Accessible Technology and Services at 530-898-4863, or email, jdolguin@csuchico.edu.

Lynda.com Tutorials within Bb Learn

Using Lynda.com tutorials has become quite popular these days for helping students learn a task or two at Chico State. Faculty may go directly to the tutorial they want to share, and copy the complete link. Paste that link into your assignment or content page in Bb Learn’s course. The full URL will work for your students.

If you need any help, don’t hesitate to call the Technology and Learning Program (TLP) for assistance at 898-6167.

Start here for your first time to visiting Lynda.com from CSU Chico, http://www.csuchico.edu/lynda.

Voice Tools are no longer supported by Blackboard Learn

The Technology and Learning Program (TLP) and Distributed Learning Technologies (DLT) want to inform our Chico State faculty about a couple important changes that will affect you and your students’ workflow this semester, 2016.

Blackboard Learn is constantly working to upgrade their system and in this case to remove Java related tools, Mostly this is a GOOD Thing. But Voice Tools are no long going to be available for use.

This includes:

  • Voice Authoring
  • Voice Board
  • Voice Email
  • Voice Podcaster
  • Voice Presentation

Blackboard will not support these tools past August 31, 2016 which is the official end of life. Most of the use cases here may be covered by Kaltura or Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. Please contact TLP for a consultation with one of our talented Instructional Designers (ITCs) for assistance.

Blackboard Collaborate “Ultra” Available

  • Modernized interface
  • Browser-based (no more Java launcher download)
  • High definition audio and video
  • Session attendance reports
  • Shared content, polling, and breakout rooms

How do I try it?

  1. Login to Blackboard Learn.
  2. Access any course.
  3. From your course menu, click (+) and add a tool link to Blackboard Collaborate Ultra.
  4. Click Join Room to check out Bb Collaborate using your default course room.
  5. Refer to Blackboard’s Getting Started resources if you want to quickly learn how to share content, invite guests, record a session, etc.
If interested, sign up for TLP training coming this August.

Is it available for mobile?

Participants must download the Bb Student app to view a session on their mobile devices.

Any Caveats?

  • Does not currently support live, synchronous sessions with more than 100 live participants. (This limitation does not apply to recordings.)
  • Moderators must use the Google Chrome browser to share desktop applications.
  • Recordings
    • Recordings do not play back text Chat activity. As a workaround, the instructor can save the Chat to a text file.
    • Recordings do not play back instructor video if  content shared at the same time. Live participants can see both; but not in the recordings.
  • Does not currently support Plan (.elp) files
