Captioning Support Services are now available at Chico State

Captioning Support Services are now available at Chico State.  The captioning support program is part of the Office of Accessible Technology and Services (OATS). This service is free of charge to university faculty and staff.

Kaltura, Chico State’s media server, automatically captions a video’s narration track when the video is uploaded. Instructors are still strongly recommended to review this automatic captioning for accuracy. If the captions are inaccurate and need to be fixed there are two options.

  1. You can edit the captions of the video yourself, or
  2. You can submit a service request for captioning support services.
Please plan accordingly. It is recommended that request be made 3-4 weeks in advance of the needed due date.

Process for requesting captioning services:

  1. Submit a service request
  2. Bring videos to the Office of Accessible Technology and Services (OATS). Located in SSC (Student Services Center) room 320 or provide appropriate links when submitting service request
  3. Reasons for Potential Delay
  • Foreign Language
  • Copyright issues
  • DVD’s

Lynda.com Tutorials within Bb Learn

Using Lynda.com tutorials has become quite popular these days for helping students learn a task or two at Chico State. Faculty may go directly to the tutorial they want to share, and copy the complete link. Paste that link into your assignment or content page in Bb Learn’s course. The full URL will work for your students.

If you need any help, don’t hesitate to call the Technology and Learning Program (TLP) for assistance at 898-6167.

Voice Tools are no longer supported by Blackboard Learn

The Technology and Learning Program (TLP) and Distributed Learning Technologies (DLT) want to inform our Chico State faculty about a couple important changes that will affect you and your students’ workflow this semester, 2016.

Blackboard Learn is constantly working to upgrade their system and in this case to remove Java related tools, Mostly this is a GOOD Thing. But Voice Tools are no long going to be available for use.

This includes:

  • Voice Authoring
  • Voice Board
  • Voice Email
  • Voice Podcaster
  • Voice Presentation

Blackboard will not support these tools past August 31, 2016 which is the official end of life. Most of the use cases here may be covered by Kaltura or Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. Please contact TLP for a consultation with one of our talented Instructional Designers (ITCs) for assistance.
