Chico State’s video management solution, Kaltura, has new features available!

Some of the new features are:

  • Captioning Support
  • External media management tool: MediaSpace – that can be accessed separately from the LMS.
  • Lecture Recording: CaptureSpace – a way to create online lectures, lab demonstrations, student presentations.

There are a couple ways to get started with these new features.

  1. Schedule a consultation with one of Instructional Technology Consultants in the Technology and Learning Program  to discuss ideas and use case.
  2. Sign-up for a hands-on workshop. The workshop provides users with an overview of the features available,  along with how to create, manage, and distribute media.

At the end of this workshop users will be able to:

  • Create media & playlist
  • Edit media
  • Distribute media

Length: 1.5 hr

Links to Lynda.com are fixed within Bb Learn!

CSU. Chico Faculty:  using Lynda.com tutorials is a great source of help to our students. Earlier this fall the internal links to Lynda.com tutorials were not working properly, and we shared with you a work-around. The issue has been repaired, and now the shortcut links work great! If you need any assistance with this, don’t hesitate to contact the Technology and Learning Program (or TLP). We are located in the basement of Meriam Library, room 003. Come visit us, or call x6167, or email tlp@csuchico.edu. We are here to serve you and help simplify instructional activities for your students.

Distributed Learning Technologies (DLT) and TLP

Distributed Learning Technologies (or DLT) is the unsung hero behind Blackboard Learn, Bb Collaborate, and so many other technologies we use in teaching our students today at CSU, Chico.

TLP focuses on how to use the tools; DLT ensures those tools are up and running.

Check out their website and their webpage for service interruptions, where you can stay up-to-date on any interruptions in campus technology services.

They are a silent but “heavy-lifting partner.”

They provide behind the scenes technical support for the Learning Management System (Blackboard Learn) and our distance learning service, Bb Collaborate. They also extend the functionality of our learning management system through  “building blocks” or “plug-in” services; such as publisher content, Kaltura Streaming Media Server, Turnitin, etc.

Manager, David Rowe has focused heavily on standardizing systems support and providing enhanced application stability.  Before this role, Dave was the Chico’s Data Warehouse Lead for a few years after moving back to Chico from Humboldt State University. Working with Dave are Miroslav Lulic (team lead), Thomas Somma, and Robert Utter.

The LMS Advisory Board (team) is comprised of DLT and TLP and also are joined by: Classroom Services, and IT Support Services. In the spirit of transparency with the campus community all of our weekly meeting notes are published online. We are proud of this strong partnership and are pleased to be working with such dedicated individuals.

TLP is now under Faculty Affairs with Faculty Development

Organizationally, the Technology and Learning Program (TLP) is moving under the leadership of AVP Wenshu Lee, and working closely with the newly developed unit of Faculty Development. TLP reports to Wenshu Lee, Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs. The Interim Director of Faculty Development is Chico Professor, Zach Justus.

This move is a welcomed transition to working more closely with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT). We have worked together over the last 15 years, but it was from more disparate organizations. With all of us working closely with Chico’s faculty, and influencing and supporting Academy e-Learning over the last 7 years, it was a natural reorganization to make. We are happy to let you know about this change, and although we still reside in the basement of Meriam Library plans are underway to move us all into a more centralized location together. More about what all this means later, as time allows the transition to occur.

One thing we want to offer to faculty is a more flexible schedule for consultations with our Instructional Designers and more opportunities for workshops on weekends or later into the evening as your needs dictate. Please let us know how we can better serve you and our 21st century students.

Laura Sederberg, Manager of TLP

Virtual meeting software, Bb Collaborate, is Here!

blackboard collaborateBlackboard Collaborate, virtual meeting software that can be embedded into any Blackboard Learn course or organization, is now available to any faculty member who wishes to connect virtually to students, colleagues, or guests. Bb Collaborate, formerly Wimba, enables an instructor and participants to communicate in real time using audio, video and text chat. During a session instructors can share PowerPoint slides, conduct polls, administer quizzes, tour web sites and share desktop applications. Additionally, sessions can be recorded and archived for playback at a later time.

Some highlights of Bb Collaborate:

– Faculty moderators can create virtual rooms for students to collaborate in a small group setting.

– Presentations by guest content experts who are located anywhere in the world, can be delivered live and recorded for future use.

– Faculty can use Bb Collaborate to create a recording of a traditional face-to-face lecture and add it to Bb Learn for students to view while the instructor is away from campus.

Currently TLP is offering fun, low-stress workshops during which participants first experience the software from a participant perspective and then as an instructor. Steps to create a Bb Collaborate session in the learning management system are also included in the workshop. To find out when the next workshop will be held please check the the TLP Workshop calendar.

For more information please contact instructional technology consultant, Marjorie Shepard, at mkshepard@csuchico.edu or at x3159. As always TLP is open from 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday in the basement of Meriam Library. Walk-ins are always welcome, however consultants are available to meet by appointment.

Welcome back, faculty! News from TLP

On behalf of the Technology and Learning Program (TLP), welcome back to CSU Chico for Fall 2012. You will notice changes to the Portal regarding access to the learning management system, Blackboard (Bb) Learn. All fall 2012 classes are in Bb Learn. Vista has retired. Faculty may access old Vista courses in order to transfer content or for grade review but student enrollments of this semester’s courses will not be there. Each fall 2012 Bb Learn course section has been created with a few basic tools and a welcome page, and these are currently visible to students.

Why use Bb Learn? It is now our current and improved learning management system. All students will have access to their courses in this one system rather than two systems like last semester. Bb Learn has an improved Grade Center, an updated web interface, easier file management, and easier integration with publisher content. Also it will integrate well with other complimentary technologies and services that expand the features and functionality, making it more comprehensive and innovative to engage 21st Century Learners, increasing efficiencies in the learning and teaching processes.

Since we started offering workshops on Bb Learn, 643 faculty and staff have attended at least one training and many of you have attended several or our complete series. Hundreds of faculty have attended workshops during Spring and Summer, and each of them have had their names added to our upcoming drawing for two iPads. There’s still time to take a workshop and get into the drawing until Friday, August 24. We’ll announce the winners on August 31! See the TLP website for the continuing schedule of workshops, www.csuchico.edu/tlp/.

TLP Can Also Help You with the Following Options in Bb Learn
Bb Collaborate allows faculty to have a virtual classroom, virtual office hours, and virtual chat with their students or students with one another via text, sound, and/or video.
Bb Drive allows faculty to drag and drop files from desktop directly into courses, with easy editing and updating directly from your hard drive’s folders into Bb Learn.
Turnitin.com has many features. The most popular being plagiarism prevention software or teaching students how to appropriately cite resources in their papers. There is also GradeMark that allows faculty to more efficiently edit each student’s paper online, inserting comments from a library of common annotations into their paper.
• Some publisher’s content can be integrated in Bb Learn, such as McGraw-Hill.
• Access to Bb Learn from mobile devices is on the horizon.

A New Chico State Blog!
We would like to introduce you to a new blog, http://blogs.csuchico.edu/dlt/, from ATEC’s Distributed Learning Technologies who are the technological support for academic technology. This blog will communicate more technically and specifically the status, updates and maintenance windows for Bb Learn and surrounding systems. It is hot off the virtual press, so it may take a day or two to appear, but do check it out.

TLP’s blog is found at http://blogs.csuchico.edu/tlp/ — this blog deals with new uses and high impact practices of integrating technology into your curriculum…pedagogy and technology.

Bb Learn iPad winner announced

Photo of EmilyThe Technology and Learning Program offered faculty a chance at an iPad by signing up for Blackboard Learn intersession training, if they registered before end of day on January 3rd. We waited until this week to draw the winner to be sure that those who signed up for workshops actually attended. Our winner is from the Finance and Marketing Department, Professor Emily Huang.
Congratulations, Emily!

We were pleasantly surprised by all the attention this iPad offer brought. We ended up with almost one hundred faculty entered into the raffle. Many faculty have chosen to teach with Bb Learn this spring semester and we are very proud of their hard work during the three weeks before the semester begins.

Watch the actual selection process on YouTube.
