Blackboard Learn Summer Update

Starting June 1, 2019, the following updates will be available in Blackboard Learn:

Download Instructor Comments on Graded Assignments

Instructors and students will appreciate that you can now download graded assignments in Blackboard Learn.  Comments are numbered and will appear at the end of the downloaded paper.

To download a marked up assignment:

• Instructors can download their comments on student papers from the Assignment Details page where they entered the grade.
• Students can download the instructor’s comments from My Grades, which also takes them to the Assignment Details page.

As a reminder, this only applies to student submissions using MS Word or PDF. Students using Google Docs, can download as a Word or PDF before submitting to the assignment.

Attendance Tool

Blackboard Learn now has an Attendance tool. For each session, you mark students as present, late, absent or excused.  Check out this video demo to get a brief overview.

In our initial testing, the Technology & Learning Program found that this tool is best suited for smaller, in-person classes. Please contact us if you are interested in using it.

This is a fun,  online workshop where you will participate  in a Zoom virtual meeting and experiment with some of its advanced features  including screen sharing, annotation, polling, and breakout rooms. You will leave the workshop with an active Zoom account,  and the confidence you need to integrate Zoom within Blackboard Learn for virtual office hours, guest speakers and student-to-student collaboration.

Spring Cleaning Tips for your Bb Learn Grade Center

Is your grade book clean and organized? Does it work for your students? Come to this workshop, and find out a few tips and tricks for ensuring there are no unpleasant surprises at the end of the semester. Kaltura + Quizzing = Increased Student Engagement

Interactive video quizzing for your Kaltura videos increases student engagement, tests knowledge and retention, and gathers effectiveness data for your media. 

How do interactive video quizzes work?

1. You create a quiz for any of your Kaltura videos.
2. As users watch a video, a multiple choice question appears at your chosen point.  Depending on configuration, students may be allowed to repeat sections, skip questions, revise answers, receive hints, and discover the correct answers.

3. When students take the quiz, their grades are automatically sent to your course grade book in Blackboard Learn.

Known issue:  All Kaltura Grade Center Columns are set to be worth 100 points. Contact the Technology & Learning Program for Weighted Total grading options.

How do I create a quiz for my own Kaltura media?

• Follow this Chico-specific tutorial for Creating and Editing Kaltura Quizzes or watch this video from Kaltura.
• Stop by the Technology and Learning Program faculty empowerment lab in MLIB 459 between the hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for a demonstration.

Changes to the Bb Learn Assignment Inline Grading Tool

In January, Blackboard Learn started using Box for inline grading.
(Inline grading refers to the instructor’s ability to mark up and annotate student submissions to Blackboard Learn assignments.) 

Why the change?

Box bought Crocodoc, the former 3rd-party product Blackboard used for inline grading. 

Is there anything that I have to do?

No. All student submissions and associated annotations will automatically be converted from Crocodoc to Box by 12pm on Jan. 11th. 

Safari High Sierra version 11.0.2 users, please see note at end of article. 

What can I expect after the change?

• Box does not currently allow students or faculty to download and print annotations. Box is working on a solution for this issue.
• The Box annotation tool is somewhat limited. It does not enable strike-through, or free-floating text-entry annotations.
• Students must refresh the page in order to see their submissions in the assignment preview window.

Blackboard Learn Unavailable December 22-25

Plan now for a stress-free holiday.

Blackboard Learn will be unavailable from Friday, December 22, 12:00am through Monday, December 25, 11:59pm as we migrate our content to more robust servers.

As a gift to yourself, we encourage you to use this opportunity to take a break, recharge, and renew. To help you prepare for this time away from your computer, you may want to:

• Complete your grading in Blackboard Learn prior to December 22nd.
• Post an announcement telling your students  you will be unavailable December 22-25.

Bb Learn Assignments

Monday, Oct. 9th 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

This workshop provides hands-on experience creating, presenting and grading assignments in Blackboard Learn.

Objectives

• Create and edit Blackboard Learn assignments.
• Create a Bb Learn rubric and associate it with a Bb Learn assignment.
• Submit to an assignment using Student Preview.
• Enter a score and provide feedback for student submissions using Needs Grading or the Grade Center.
• Use the Inline Grading feature to mark up PDF and MS Word assignment submissions.
• Download assignments for viewing offline.
• Differentiate between a Bb Learn assignment and a Turnitin assignment.

Bb Learn Groups

Tuesday, October 10th 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

This workshop provides hands-on practice creating, editing, and using Bb Learn groups.

Objectives

• Create a group using manual, self, or random enrollment
• Access groups from a content area or the My Groups shortcut.
• Differentiate between group and group set

• Grade group work submitted using the group tools.

Bb Learn Tests

This workshop provides an introduction to tests within Blackboard Learn.

• Create a test in a practice space.
• Add a variety of question types to a test.
• Set the test display options for students.
• Access student test attempts from the Grade Center.

• Consider alternate methods to create tests through Respondus

Bb Learn Grade Center

Thursday, October 12th 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

This scenario-based, hands-on workshop provides experience working in a live gradebook that contains enrolled students, activities, and grades. The materials were created so that a faculty member can enter the gradebook and edit freely without fear of disrupting an actual live CSU Chico section. Each faculty member has access to his or her own private section and may edit, remove or add data in order to experiment with the gradebook feature of Bb Learn.

Objectives

• The participants will be able to examine the full Grade Center and its tools.
• The participants will be able to experiment with a sample Grade Center, sample data and the associated tools.
• The participants will be able to take gained knowledge and apply it to their own class grade centers
